'Elvis' battles for No. 1 at North American weekend box office

    In a battle for the number one spot this weekend at the North American box office, Warner Bros. Pictures' "Elvis" opened with a three-day estimate of 30.5 million U.S. dollars.

    According to studio figures released by measurement firm Comscore, the biographical musical drama film generated 12.8 million dollars, 10 million dollars and 7.7 million dollars on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively.

    Directed by Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, starring Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks, the big-screen spectacle explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, an American icon in the music industry during the 20th century.

    The film holds an approval rating of 78 percent based on 249 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it an "A-" on CinemaScore, a market research firm that surveys audiences to rate their viewing experiences.

    Overseas, "Elvis" took in 20 million dollars from 51 international markets for a global total of 50.5 million dollars.
